Chopta in Winter: The Complete Snow Trek Guide (2026)
Chopta is often called the Mini Switzerland of India, and in winter it earns the name. From December to February the meadows around Chopta and the trail to Tungnath disappear under a thick blanket of snow.
The best window for a snow trek is late December to mid-February. Earlier, you may get patchy snow; later, the upper trail can become icy. Start the summit push by 4 AM to catch sunrise from Chandrashila.
Layering is everything: a thermal base, a fleece mid-layer and a down or padded jacket on top. Add woollen socks, waterproof gloves and a balaclava. We provide microspikes and gaiters on all winter batches.
Finally — go slow. The altitude gain from Chopta (2,680 m) to Chandrashila (4,000 m) is significant. Hydrate, eat well and listen to your trip captain.
